Few years ago, Metatags used to be the only way search engines read and ranked a webpage. This is no longer the case. Search engines take into consideration ALL the content, tags, title tags, etc. on your page.
That said, metatags can still draw attention to your website so be sure your metatags are consistent with your tags, keyword phrasing and title tags. Keyword Meta tags should not exceed 1024 characters and Description Meta tags should not exceed 250 characters.
Accurately describe your business, product, goods or services within your keywording. Using creative copy to draw people to your site is necessary but be sure it is directly related to what you are promoting.
One should avoid keyword stuffings in tags, few keywords or no keyword tag will do. Think of using tags to describe best about your page instead of repeating them unnecessary. Do not use the same tag over and over again. Do not repeat your title tag for your webpage. Only one per page, please. Search engines can read this and will view your website as spam.
Do not submit identical pages of your website or give copies of your pages different file names. Do not submit any of your webpages more than once to any search engine within a 24 hour period of time.
Do not use meta tags that have nothing to do with the content on your site just to draw attention to your webpage in hopes of receiving a higher listing. Many people are paid lots of money to seek out search engine abusers and they will catch you.
